Discover Lille with Catherine Krawczyk

I was born in Bruay-en-Artois, not far from the head offices of the Bruay Mining Company, in the land of coalmines and slag heaps, and believe me, that makes me a true “Ch’ti”, a genuine Northerner.

A bit about me...

As a child, I often went to the 13th -15th c. Châteaud’Ohlain, a major stronghold for the Artois in medieval times, and I imagined the lives of the lords and ladies who once lived there… I guess that’s where I got my love of history and heritage.

However, I first studied English at university, passed the agrégation, got a DEA (post-MA diploma) in language, literature and civilisation of English-speaking countries, and worked as a teacher for the French Ministry of Education for 40 years. In the last 20 years, I taught Higher Education Tourism Students, and that rekindled my passion for old stones (or bricks!) and history.

I love the stories told by buildings and monuments, and I like to share them. Also, I’ve been living in Lille for over 40 years, and I’ve always been confident that this formerly big industrial city would become a popular tourist destination. And I wanted to be part of it!

So I took a degree as a Tour Guide in Arras, graduated in 2021, and here I am, happily leading French and foreign visitors on walking tours of my beloved Lille ever since! I work with the Lille Tourist Office, but also as a self-employed guide, and I’d be delighted to share my passion for Lille with you.
